    Gill Pro Dinghy Smock

I haven’t used one but I’ve found most of the Gill gear is reasonable quality.

One of the features I like is the fact that the neck seal is adjustable at the back rather than at the front which can compromise the seal and also irritate the skin. Also the side zip means there’s a better seal.

    • Close fitting PU neck seal for for a watertight s
    • Adjustable Neoprene waistband for a secure and watertight seal
    • Adjustable PU cuffs for watertight comfort
    • 2-layer coated fabric with a durable repellent finish
    • Fully taped seams for a waterproof seal
    • Fabric Composition 100% Nylon

    AU$250 from Gill

Video features below (although I note that the front zip has now been moved to the side for 2020)

Weta Marine have now produced a Twin Tiller Extension Kit

The benefit of this kit is that it doesn’t require additional hardware stuck on the boat for the tiller rest to prevent the lazy tiller extension from dragging in the water – the bungee cord holds the tiller on the tramp when not in use and the steel ring slides down the pole when you use it so you have full articulation. It also helps to centre the tiller during the tack.

The twin tiller extension kit includes:

    • 1 x two piece tiller extension with universal joint (two piece makes shipping by mail possible now!)

    • 2 x stainless steel rings

    • 2m 3mm bungy

    • 1 x Round tiller adapter

    • 2 x 50mmx4mm bolts and nuts

    • 4 x round stoppers

    • New tiller end plug

Available now through your local dealer.

    TWIN TILLER OVERVIEW

TWO TILLER EXTENSION BASES BOLTED TOGETHER WITH TWO 50MM X 4MM BOLTS

END OF BUNGY TIED TO GENNAKER RATCHET BLOCK. BUNGY GOES UNDER TRAMP

3MM BUNGY TIED TO STAINLESS RING USING PLASTIC BALL ON END OF BUNGY

HIGH QUALITY CARBON TWO PIECE TILLER EXTENSION

A SIMPLE DAB OF EPOXY GLUE ON SPIG TO MAKE A PRECISION JOIN

    Bowsprit Mounts

Mounting a camera on the bowsprit is a great way of capturing the action on the boat and the smiling faces of the sailors (don’t forget to smile!).

You need the camera low enough so it doesn’t snag the bottom of the screecher when you gybe, so make sure that the mount and camera have any sharp edges removed or taped over.

While GoPro mounts are well made, they do tend to make the camera quite high and if you have a 1/4” standard tripod hole on the camera or an adapter, I recommend the Sony Mounts such as the VCT-RBM2 which use a strap to secure it instead of the thumb screws of the GoPro mounts which can catch the furling line.

Avoid cheap mounts from eBay or the ones from Kaiser Bass or SP Gadgets as, with some exceptions, they don’t use 316 Stainless Steel which means they corrode quickly in seawater.

If you use a pole, a handlebar mount is usually the right size.

There are also head mounts available – good for seeing exactly where you’re looking and how much time you spend looking outside the boat.

The problem with bolting it through top and bottom is that the bottom bolt and tiller extension may contact the cockpit sides if you have to put the tiller hard over – or more likely the bulge from the ama arm sockets.

If you attach two tiller extension saddles either side of the tiller and, instead of screwing them in place, use bolts right through the tiller, they can’t hit the deck or cockpit.

You can unbolt the original single tiller attachment fitting from the top of the tiller using a small spanner to hold the nuts inside the tiller while you unscrew the bolt.

    Tiller drag prevention
Once you’ve installed your twin tiller system you then have to decide what you do with the loose tiller – you can leave it to drag in the water skiff style – but it may get in the way. Alternatives are:

    1. Use a ring
Before you add the rubber end fitting to the tiller extension, thread a plastic ring down the tube.
Then use some thin bungee to attach this to the hiking strap to keep it from falling off the edge of the tramp but allow it to swing forward if you go forward.
    2. Use a rest made from conduit tube
Tie some conduit tube under the tramp from the forward arm so that it extends at least 20cm from under the stern  ama arm. Ensure the tube is tied so it’s can’t swivel round.
Add an upright piece of conduit tube to the existing tube at the stern to create the tiller extension rest.
When you tack you can let go of the old tiller extension and either place it in the rest or let it fall onto the rest which will keep it from dragging in the water.

Drift Ghost X – the best Weta camera (so far)

The main problem with most of the cameras listed previously is the limited battery life which might be fine on a dry yacht where you can change the battery but on a weta boat like the Weta, trying to change the battery on the water makes it likely you will get the camera or battery wet – or both.

The US $99 Drift Ghost X is one of the few affordable action cameras available with a 5hr battery without an external battery pack.

    • 5 HOUR BATTERY LIFE – Longest battery life on the market filming at 1080P Full HD. Up to 8-hours battery life with the Long-life battery module (sold separately – NOTE not compatible with the waterproof case).
    • ROTATING LENS – Easily align your shot regardless of the mounting position by turning the lens up to 300 degrees.
    • VIDEO TAGGING – Capture unexpected moments after they happen.
    • CLONE MODE – Users can sync up to 10 Ghost X or Ghost 4K cameras via WiFi. Start recording on one camera and all start recording. Change settings on one, and the rest will change.
    • CAR DVR MODE – Use the Ghost X as a safety camera by recording continuously when plugged into a power supply. When power is cut, recording will stop and save the last interval. Great for insurance purposes.

It’s small size, light-weight and streamlined format makes it ideal for use on a boat and the light weight means it’s less likely to vibrate when mounted on a pole.

The downsides are that it requires the optional waterproof case, especially for a wet boat like the Weta, and only provides 1080p resolution. If you need higher resolution, there is a Ghost 4K available which also has remote control but battery life is reduced to 3hrs. The Ghost X It also lacks image stabilization but if you want to stabalise shaky video footage, there are video editing products and websites that will stabalise your video files.

An App is available for iOS or Android which enables you to change settings, preview the image, start and stop recording, transfer files and live-stream the footage. The App colour scheme makes it really hard to read in sunlight so I recommend using the buttons on the camera to start and stop recording.

NOTE It comes with a getting started guide which is OK but doesn’t cover everything. As Drift Innovation haven’t seen fit to produce a manual for the Ghost X, I’ve created one from the Ghost 4K manual with irrelevant features removed (e.g. Remote control) but also added information such as Clone Mode which isn’t covered in the Ghost 4K manual. Use it at your own risk but comments welcome. https://tinyurl.com/drift-ghost-x-manual

Tip: The camera is supplied without any mounts and they are available from Drift. However it is also compatible with standard 1/4″ tripod mounts and I recommend the SONY mounts as they use straps rather than thumbnuts (which means less for ropes to catch on) and also they use stainless steel parts. Don’t use Kaiser Bass or SP Gadets Mounts because they don’t use 316 Marine Grade Stainless Steel.

Tip: If the water temperature is cooler than the air temperature, you may get condensation forming over the lens cover of the waterproof case and obscuring the image . You can get around this either by putting the camera in the case in front of an air conditioning vent to reduce the moisture (in the car for example), or by putting strips of paper towel in the gaps between the camera and the case (making sure you don’t obscure the lens).

The Weta struggles to overcome the drag from 3 hulls in less than 5 knots but between 5-8 knots it’s OK and it will plane upwind above 8 knots in flat water. It gets fun above 10 knots and really fun up to about 30. More than that is ok and depends on the sea state – but it will be very wet and fast but easier than survival sailing especially without the jib.

The main advantages of the Weta over the Wave are:

    1. Sail area

The Weta has 123 ft² of sail for main and jib but then there’s also the Genneker which adds another 26 ft². Up to about 5 knots it can pay to use the Genneker as a “code zero” by sheeting it in hard,  which doesn’t allow you to point much but is better than not moving at all. The combination of main and jib is more efficient than main alone because of the effect of the airflow over the main from the jib.

The Wave only has 95 ft² of mainsail in total.

    2. Weight

The Wetas carbon and fibreglass construction means it only weighs 265lbs fully rigged for a boat which is 18.10′ x 11.6′ when rigged (but only 14.5’x5.7′ on the trolley) with a 21.6′ mast.

Wheres the Wave is 245 lbs of Rotomolded Polyethylene and is 13′ x 7′ with a 20′ aluminium mast.

    3. Daggerboard and tacking

The Weta daggerboard and jib means it tacks like a monohull even in light winds whereas the mainsail only of the Wave and twin hulls means it’s quite hard to tack in light winds.

    4. Optional sails

There is a larger 42ft² Genneker available and also a number of 3rd party “fat-head” mainsails available which increase the size by about 10%.

Weta are testing a new lightweight hull and larger mainsail combination for use in areas with light winds.

    Hope this helps

If you don’t sail in over 20 knots of breeze you could get away with using a 2:1 ratio system for the Harken furler as it gives you a double the number of furling turns for half the effort (as described in this forum post).

However, if you do decide to upgrade, I also upgraded my boat from the Harken furler to the KZ Furler and removed the fairlead.

Like all the cleats on the Weta, it’s held in place with self-tapping screws rather than bolts, so it’s very easy to remove – I’d advise cleaning the old sealant off the screws and adding a dab of new silicon sealant before doing them up again.

    Hope this helps

I think I found a copy of the Ad here (although it has now been removed from Craiglist).

It does strike me as suspicious too – why would someone steal all the parts of a Weta which an owner would typically take away with them to prevent it from being stolen?

There is a second serial number stamped on a metal tag underneath the transom bar.

    Paul
